News and Announcements for Northern Tier Expedition 2015:

MUST HAVE NORTHERN TIER DEPOSITS AND FINAL ATTENDEE COUNTS BY 15 SEPT
If you are planning to attend the Northern Tier High Adventure Canoeing Trip next summer, let ASM Keys know NOW (and pay your $100 deposit)!!! We will close the opportunity on the evening of 15 Sept. at the Court of Honor.
We currently have three crews reserved with Northern Tier, but only have 11 youth and 5 adults signed up - not enough to fill three crews! If we do not identify more attendees, it will be more economical to go with only two crews.
PAYMENT SCHEDULE FOR NORTHERN TIER
The payment schedule for the trip is based on the payment schedule to Norther Tier:
  • IMMEDIATELY: $100 Deposit for holding a slot.
  • 29 SEP: $300 (this plus deposit covers over half the Northern Tier Fees).
  • 16 MAR: $400 (this more than completes Northern Tier Fees).
  • 01 JUN: ~$700 balance due to cover remaining trip costs.

Total trip costs are estimated to be around $1500. We will have a better estimate once airline and ground transport costs are identified.
ADULT TRAINING REQUIREMENTS (START THEM NOW!)
It is not too early to begin completing required training for the adult leaders. The Northern Tier Advisor Planning Guide includes these requirements:
    Each Crew must have:
  • A minimum of two adults (one of which must be at least 21 years of age and registered with the BSA). There are no gender restrictions for leadership except for co-ed Venturing crews, which must have both male and female leadership 21 years old or older.
  • 1 adult leader trained in the following:
    • Wilderness First Aid (16 hour course)
    • CPR
    • Weather Hazards
    • Safe Swim Defense
    • Safety Afloat
  • All adult leaders must be trained in "Youth Protection Training."
We currently have three crews going, so we must have a minimum of six adults with three of them having been trained in the courses listed above. By far, the most difficult training to obtain is the Wilderness First Aid course. But here's GOOD NEWS!!! Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification is being offered by the Greater Alabama Council in January 2015. While we only need three, I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE all adults attending Northern Tier next year to take this course and be certified in CPR. I am signing up as soon as possible to secure a slot. The course flier is downloadable here.
CURRENT PLANS:
In July of 2015, Troop 94 plans to visit the BSA Northern Tier High Adventure Base in Atikokan, Ontario, Canada. Preliminary plans are being made now. If you wish to participate, study the following information and watch this page for updates.

WHERE? Troop 94 is currently targeting the base in Atikokan, ON, Canada.

WHEN? The confirmed trip dates are from 02 July - 11 July 2015. A draft/tentative agenda is as follows:
  • Thu., 02 July: Depart from Atlanta/Birmingham/Nashville(?) and flying to Thunder Bay, ON, Canada. Camp/hotel that night.
  • Fri, 03 July: Arrange for transport to Atikokan, ON, Canada - arrive at Base around lunch.
    • ADVENTURE BEGINS!!!
    • Fri., 03 July: Spend the afternoon at Atikokan checking in, getting trip planned, readying gear.
    • Sat., 04 July - Fri. 10 July: Six nights/seven days canoeing through U.S./Canada Boundary Waters.
    • Fri., 10 July: Last night spent at Atikiocan Base Camp.
    • Sat., 11 July: Early rise and continental breakfast, Depart Atikokan Base.
    • ADVENTURE ENDS :(
  • Sat., 11 July: Transport to Thunder Bay airport.
  • Sat., 11 July: Afternoon/evening return flight to initial airport, return to Huntsville.
  • Sun., 12 July: Margin travel day (if needed), else clothes washing and story telling.

The important part of the tentative agenda above is the plan to be at the base from 03 July through 11 July 2015 for an eight night adventure.

HOW MUCH? While is is far too early to have an accurate quote for price, we are estimating about $1500 per person. This includes airfare, transportation from airport to base and back, one night hotel, fee for Northern Tier participants, and food in transit. A better estimate will be available as we determine the costs.

WHO? To attend the Norther Tier (and any other BSA High Adventure Base), you must be 14 years old OR 13 years old AND have completed the 8th grade by the time of arrival at Northern Tier. We plan to make reservations for 24 persons - three crews of eight apiece.

WHAT CAN I BE DOING NOW? Start collecting the following:
  • FUNDING - Down payments are due now! We will be posting a payment schedule soon.
  • PASSPORT - Since we plan to go to Adikokan, ON, Canada, everyone will need a passport!
  • RESEARCH - Get familiar with the camp by reading information at www.ntier.org
